VACUBOMB

watch me build a VACUBOMB from scratch.

[edit] My own ideas...

The great thing about working on a project for yourself is that you don't have to come up with any excuses when you change directions.

My previous thoughts on APIs, and creating an API powered backend got to the point of a PHP class skeleton. Screw it. I went out on a tangent, and created an alpha version of my Unicorn Gas project (it's sweet, and going to get sweeter). I'm not making a new backend.

I'm just going to pull in the RSS feeds into a template like everyone else; I am going to use the 960 Grid system; I thought about using WordPress/podsCMS, but I'm kind of attached to Posterous and Twitter. Lastly, I'm hoping to use canvas to draw the graphics :D, I've already begun on the 2010 temp page...

love.

Unicorn Gas!

After playing around with the Boxee Bookmarklet, I've been inspired to do something similar. I've torn it apart, and I've programmed some JS to a point where it will run my own jQuery scripts on any page!

The best part of all of this, is that I finally have a use for unicorngas.com! Combine the bookmarket, a super simple page design, and a single task, going to do one thing very well (on any computer, iPhone, or likely Android device). Once it's working, I'll probably open it on a limited beta to friends and geeks in #newwest.

PS: Hey posterous, I really like your tag input box ;)

Oh My... API!

Instead of building VACUBOMB using WordPress, my plan is to design an object-oriented modular back-end that imports and exports data using various RESTful API's.

WTF am I thinking?!

Well, every decent web service has a RESTful API. The way I figure it, I want to tweet; I want to blog (w/ Posterous); I don't want to mirror it all; and I don't want to manage the backends.

I'll be able to take data from wherever I want; mix it, filter it, separate it, modify it; and then feed it to a template engine to make it pretty.

Think about it, you'll be able to drop in a Twitter Mod, Posterous Mod, RSS Mod, Scrape Mod etc. using the same object, pull in any data, and in turn post any data!

Here's my current plan (in order)
I hope these posts help you as i have realized that these outbursts of thought are helping me flush out a lot of ideas. The original thought was to just import RSS feeds and output them with a template engine. fuck that.

Buying locally should also include your website. Before VACUBOMB crushes them like fleas (kidding), I want to point out a couple of amazing web designers that I've had the chance to work with in the Vancouver area...

1981
I'd be lying if I didn't say that this is my brother. When I stopped designing, he started. Check out, he's busy for a reason. I have been writing a lot of php (heart) code and WordPress (love) plugins for his sites over the last year or so.

WEMAKEONE
We should be enemies, but Steve is hard to hate.

Lastly, I want to also point out that we are actively making 1" buttons over here at VACUBOMB under the loving monicker Art Fag. Get a quote at http://vacubomb.com/artfag/

Check! One! Two!

I'd like to take a second to welcome myself back to the Internet. I'm
going to be chronicling VACUBOMB's rebuild over the next couple months.

You'll see some Photoshop mockups, code, swear words, and other random
outbursts as I turn the 10 year old vacubomb project inc. into VACUBOMB.

Hope you enjoy the ride.

Love ws.
